Pa. city ‘worse than average’ when it comes to sleeping

Patriot-News - 3/8/2024

A good night’s sleep is one of the foundations of a healthy life.

Unfortunately for residents of this one Pennsylvania city, such a thing is harder to come by.

Sleep Foundation — which publishes “comprehensive health information drawn from high-quality sources and reviewed by experts in the field” in order to “help you…get the sleep you need,” according to its about section — published a report in January titled “The Best & Worst U.S. Cities for Sleep.”

Leveraging data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as the U.S. Census Bureau, Sleep Foudnaiton researchers analyzed the 75 biggest U.S. cities and ranked them on the following sleep-related indicators:

Philadelphia ended up ranking as the ninth overall worst city for sleep, with nearly 40 percent of its population getting less than seven hours of sleep.

“Besides not getting enough sleep, Philadelphia is worse than average when it comes to participating in certain health risk behaviors,” the report elaborates.

“This includes binge drinking (17.4% compared with the U.S. average of 15.5%), smoking (19.5% while the U.S. average is 13.5%), and a lack of leisure time (30.8% with 23.7% being the U.S. average). These can all contribute to poor health which means not-so-great sleep.”

The study also adds how Philadelphia “is also the worst city for bed bugs,” which certainly can’t help.

The absolute worst U.S. city for sleep was Detroit, Mich. The very best was Portland, Ore.
